Aim of Yoga
A reflection on Yoga as a means of cleansing the mind and turning awareness inward.

योगेन चित्तस्य पदेन वाचां, मलं शरीरस्य च वैद्यकेन । योऽपाकरोत् तं प्रवरं मुनीनां,पतञ्जलिं प्राञ्जलि रानतोऽस्मि ॥ Yogena cittasya padena vācāṃ malaṃ śarīrasya ca vaidyakena । Yo’pākarottaṃ pravaraṃ munīnāṃ Patañjaliṃ prāñjalirānatosmi ॥ (I bow down with folded hands to sage Patañjali, the supreme amongst sages, who removed impurity of the Citta by Yoga, removed impurity of communication by grammar, and removed impurity of body by Vaidyaka Ayurveda, the science of health). This clearly tells us that the aim of Yoga is to remove the impurities of the Citta, the mind. Sage Patañjali, who was the first to codify Yoga, drew up eight steps for silencing the mind. These eight steps systematically wash away the impurities of the mind, make it progressively pure and clean. Yoga aims to go from Objective world to subjective world.
